Neurosurgery, Spine Surgery

About

Dr. Jaime L. Martínez Santos completed his neurosurgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Before returning to MUSC, Dr. Martínez completed accredited fellowship training in complex cranial neurosurgery including neuro-oncology, skull base, and cerebrovascular neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Dr. Martínez's expertise and clinical interests include surgery of primary and metastatic brain tumors (including complex brain tumors involving deep and highly functional regions), skull base tumors (meningiomas, vestibular schwannomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, pituitary tumors, etc.), vascular pathologies such as cerebral aneurysms, brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations, arteriovenous fistulae, carotid stenosis (i.e., microsurgical endarterectomies), moyamoya disease, and cerebrovascular microsurgical bypass.

Dr. Martínez is a passionate anatomist and neuroanatomist with numerous years of teaching experience and scientific publications. His main research interests include microsurgical anatomy, and surgical simulation and education. In Dr. Martínez's anatomy and microsurgical skills laboratory, medical students, neurosurgery residents, and fellows can learn comprehensive anatomy and neuroanatomy and hone their microsurgical skills. This opportunity will be available for international neurosurgeons and trainees in the form of courses, post-doctoral fellowships, and observerships. Dr. Martínez is involved in numerous professional organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS).
