At University Family Medicine -Ellis Oak, patients will find specialized care in family medicine, conveniently located in James Island. Our doctors deliver academic medicine excellence and are committed to advancing the health of our community. We are accepting new patients of all ages, from newborns to grandparents. Your family medicine care team consists of doctors, nurses, technicians, medical students, and support staff who work in unison to provide you with the best care. We diagnose and treat a wide range of health conditions, offering accessible and complete medical care for acute illnesses, chronic disease management, and preventive care-on-site laboratory and pharmacy services are also available to our patients. As part of the Medical University of South Carolina academic medical center, you may be seen by resident physicians ("residents"). Our residents are doctors who have completed medical school and are pursuing specialized training in the Family Medicine field. Medical students may also be in the clinic alongside residents and attendings.

Dr. Freedy is a Professor of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He is trained as both a PhD Clinical Psychologist (1990, Kent State University) as well as a board-certified family physician (MD 2002, MUSC; Trident-MUSC Family Medicine Residency 2002-2005). He has over 20 years of faculty experience at MUSC. Dr. Freedy's clinical practice is located on James Island (Ellis Oaks). His educational efforts include work with medical students, resident physicians, psychology interns/postdoctoral fellows, and peer-professional colleagues. His clinical and research interests include: violence and traumatic stress; occupational stress/burnout; mental health/behavioral science in primary care; and doctor-patient relationship.

About

Michael North Jr., M.D. is a family medicine physician who specializes in primary care for patients of all ages, from children to adults. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, and went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, VA where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, where he trained in family medicine and served as Chief Resident.





Dr. North's practice includes preventative care, treatment of acute illnesses, and management of chronic conditions. He cares for patients both in the hospital and the clinic. He performs in-office procedures including joint injections as well as dermatologic and women's health procedures.





Dr. North is passionate about educating his patients and future generations of doctors. He believes that education is key to improving health and understanding. Accordingly, he actively participates in training both medical students and resident physicians. He values building long-term relationships with his patients and their families, collaborating to improve their health and well-being. Dr. North is committed to providing high-quality care and contributing to the health of his community.

Dr. Eric M. Matheson, M.D. MSCR, completed his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2001 and his family medicine residency from St. Vincent's family medicine residency program in 2004. Dr. Matheson completed his master's in clinical research from MUSC in 2009. His clinical and research interests include nutrition, preventive care, and medical education. He is currently an associate professor.
