Thomas Curran, MD, MPH

Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Curran received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and subsequently his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He completed general surgery residency and research fellowship at the Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston during which time he received a masters of public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. From there he pursued a year of specialty fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota before joining the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina.His clinical interests include benign anorectal conditions, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), and colon and rectal cancer with a particular focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgical procedures. His research program focuses on comparative effectiveness and quality improvement in colon and rectal surgery. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and is active in multiple national surgical societies related to colon and rectal surgery.

Dr. Pinckney Maxwell earned his medical degree here at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He subsequently completed his fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia to obtain specialized training in colon and rectal surgery. He was invited to remain at Thomas Jefferson on the faculty for several years before returning to his alma mater here at MUSC in 2011. Dr. Maxwell specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. His areas of expertise include colon and rectal cancer; inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease; benign colonic diseases such as diverticulitis and rectal prolapse; fecal incontinence; benign anorectal diseases such hemorrhoids and anal fissures; and colonoscopy for screening, surveillance, diagnosis, and therapeutics. He is a specialist in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery, using minimally invasive techniques to treat many of these diseases. He also works in close collaboration with gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, urologists and interventional radiologists to develop multidisciplinary and individualized management strategies for his patients.

Maggie Westfal, MD, MPH

Maggie Westfal, M.D., MPH, is a fellowship-trained colon and rectal surgeon specializing in both benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. Clinically she is interested in colon, rectal, and anal cancer as well as benign anorectal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, and rectal prolapse. From a surgical perspective, Dr. Westfal has been trained in all techniques of colon and rectal surgery but is specifically interested in minimally invasive and robotic approaches. She enjoys working with her patients to make joint patient-physician care decisions while also utilizing multi-disciplinary care teams to aid in these decisions.
Dr. Westfal earned her medical degree and Master of Public Health degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. She remained in Boston for general surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital where she spent three years performing clinical outcomes research and implementing the research skills that she acquired during her public health studies. Her research interests include early onset colorectal cancer, including patients with both hereditary and non-hereditary disease. She completed her training in colon and rectal surgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Westfal is a member of several surgical societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Her research has been presented at several national meetings for these and other societies. She led several trainee wellbeing councils throughout her training and remains passionate about improving the well-being of trainees across all specialties.
Outside of work, Dr. Westfal enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She was a former two-sport varsity athlete at Yale University and enjoys following both the women's soccer and ice hockey teams. A life-long east coaster, she enjoys vacationing at the beach. When time permits, she loves to bake and enjoys making chocolate chip cookies and chocolate chip banana bread for friends and family.

Cyrus Feizpour, MD

Dr. Cyrus Feizpour is a colon and rectal surgeon who provides expert care for patients with conditions of the colon, rectum, and anus, including colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, and other colorectal issues. He uses minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques whenever possible, helping patients recover faster and return to their daily lives. Dr. Feizpour takes the time to listen to each patient, explain treatment options clearly, and create a care plan tailored to their needs.
