Dr. Lance Stein is transplant hepatologist and the Medical Director of Piedmont’s Hepatology and Liver Transplant Program since 2021. He has been at Piedmont since 2010. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine. His special interests include viral hepatitis, alcohol related liver disease, acute on chronic liver failure, metabolic associated steatotic liver disease (MASH/MAFLD), and autoimmune liver diseases (including but not limited to autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis). He also is an expert in management of the complications of liver cirrhosis including portal hypertension and liver cancers.

He is a fellow for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Gastroenterology Association, and the American College of Physicians. He has served on national committees for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association and the American Society of Transplantation.

Following graduation from Temple University School of Medicine, he completed residency in internal medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, San Diego. He also completed a fellowship in advanced/transplant hepatology at both Columbia and Cornell-New York Presbyterian Hospitals.
