While studying at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2003, Dr. Benner worked in the research department at the Shelbourne Knee Center. It was here that he realized a passion for treating knees and decided to specialize in the treatment of knee conditions and injuries.
Originally from Remington, Indiana, Dr. Benner graduated from Valparaiso University in 2002 and Indiana University School of Medicine in 2006. Dr. Benner finished his orthopaedic surgery residency at The Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee in 2011. Here he received world-class instruction from physicians who author the premier textbook in the specialty, Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics. Dr. Benner then completed a fellowship in knee surgery, sports medicine, and knee replacement at The Insall Scott Kelly Institute in New York City. This fellowship taught him the surgical techniques and patient care philosophies of Dr. John Insall, internationally regarded as the father of modern knee replacement.
Dr. Benner returned home to Indiana and reunited with the Shelbourne Knee Center, with a shared dedication to a team approach with specialized physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and research staff. Dr. Benner specializes in knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction, and complex revision knee replacement. However, Dr. Benner is firm believer in non-surgical management of knee problems, with surgery reserved only for patients who do not achieve pain relief with appropriate specialized rehabilitation.
