Dr. James Gardner is a non-surgical sports medicine physician and Assistant Professor in the department of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical University of South Carolina. He specializes in non-surgical treatment of acute and chronic sports injuries, treating medical problems in athletes, and the use of ultrasound for musculoskeletal diagnosis and interventional procedures for joints and tendons. Originally from Salt Lake City, UT, Dr. Gardner completed his undergraduate studies in Human Movement Science at Utah State University and received his medical degree from the University of Utah. He then completed an internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN where he served as chief resident. Dr. Gardner completed his sports medicine fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he was team physician for St. Pius High School, Emory University, and Overtime Elite Academy and provided medical coverage for a variety of professional teams including the Atlanta Falcons (NFL), Atlanta Hawks (NBA), Atlanta SkyHawks (NBA G-league), Atlanta Vibe (Pro Volleyball Federation), and US Soccer Extended National Teams.





Dr. Gardner is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM\&R) and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He is passionate about the use of ultrasound in sports medicine and is trained in a variety of ultrasound guided procedures, including joint and bursa injections, tendon procedures such as percutaneous needle fenestration and needle tenotomy, and biologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Dr. Gardner's mantra is "aggressive diagnosis and conservative treatment" and is passionate about working with his patients to build a comprehensive treatment plan that supports their athletic and activity goals. He is accepting new patients and is located in West Ashley.
