He serves MUSC as the Medical Director of the Surgical / Trauma Intensive Care Unit, specializing in the care of patients in need of emergency surgery. In addition, he treats patients in non-emergent situations for hernia repair and gall bladder surgery. His patient care philosophy is to involve his patients in the decision making process of their treatment options to provide the best possible outcome.
Recognized for clinical excellence, Dr. Leon was awarded the MUSC Foundation Outstanding Clinician Award in 2019 and the College of Medicine Faculty Excellence Award - Clinical Years Honorable Mention in 2018. He serves on many leadership committees both at MUSC, including the Major Trauma Committee, Emergency Services Subcommittee of the Critical Care Committee, and the ICU Quality Committee. He is a member of numerous national organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
Dr. Leon received his fellowship training in both Trauma and Critical Care from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the Guthrie Clinic at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania.
